Spring temperatures may still be a few weeks away, but don't let that stop you and your family from welcoming spring by spending more time outdoors. Check out some of my family's favorite ways to ring in spring:
Enjoy the Light
1 of 10By mid-March, the clocks have officially sprung forward, so get outside in the evenings and take advantage of that extra hour of daylight. Play a game of baseball with the kids in the backyard, or take a family walk around the block before or after dinner.
Start a Garden
2 of 10Get a jump-start on your garden and start growing seedlings. A garden is a great way to teach kids where our food comes from and encourage healthy eating.
Go on a Spring Scavenger Hunt
3 of 10Create a list of items you can find outdoors during spring—green grass, robins, insects, birds' nests, blooming flowers, worms, mud puddles—then challenge your kids to find them all.
Take a Hike
4 of 10Get out and admire nature up close and personal. The trails won't be packed and the biting bugs won't be out in full force yet.
Go Out for Ice Cream
5 of 10In New England, a sure sign spring is here is when the Mom and Pop ice cream shops open back up for the season.
Dust Off the Outdoor Toys
6 of 10Bubbles, riding toys, bikes, balls, bats; it's time to get the backyard ready for lots of outdoor play.
Eat Outdoors
7 of 10Serve lunch or dinner on the porch. If my kids have a choice to eat outside in their backyard or go out to their favorite restaurant, hands down, eating outside wins. There's something special about sharing a meal under the sun in the fresh air. The easy clean up is an added bonus.
Sign Your Child up for Spring Sports
8 of 10Soccer, baseball and softball are three of the favorite spring sports for kids. Check with your local YMCA, parks and recreation department or youth sports league.
Go to a Baseball Game
9 of 10Spring means baseball is back in season. Many baseball teams offer special kids season passes and meet and greet sessions with the players.
