Racing to Save Lives for People and Pets!
As many of you know I have run 2 marathons to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This year I have decided to switch gears slightly. I am going to enter my first Olympic distance triathlon with Team In Training in Austin, Texas on Memorial Day weekend. This involves swimming 0.9 miles, biking 25 miles then running 6.2 miles. For my previous races I ran in honor of Dominick Pucci IV who was born with leukemia. Thankfully, Dominick is now a happy 4 ½ year old who only has to get a few blood tests done every year but is otherwise a healthy little boy. I will still be racing in honor of Dominick but I would also like to dedicate my race to all of my canine and feline cancer patients. Lymphoma is one of the most common cancers found in pets. In years past, an animal diagnosed with lymphoma was lucky to live for 3 months. After graduating from vet school in 1998, our practice treated our first patient with a full chemotherapy protocol, similar to what is used in humans. ‘Norman’ (aka Hermie) was a very sweet Lab mix who was beloved by his owner, Kathy. Norman underwent several rounds of chemo, never losing his happy attitude and survived many months of good quality life before succumbing to his disease. Since then we have treated both dogs and cats for a variety of cancers. Without the research done with money raised by groups like the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, none of this would be possible. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has raised over $800 million dollars for research and patient care involving the blood related cancers, lymphoma, leukemia and multiple myeloma. To help them reach their goal of finding a cure, I have pledged to raise a minimum of $4,500. All donations are tax deductible and come with my heartfelt thanks!
