• Early stage breast cancers are virtually cured in the U.S. (The five-year survival rate for breast cancer that has not spread beyond the breast is now 99 percent compared to 74 percent in 1982.)

• Susan G. Komen Minnesota's service area covers all 87 counties of Minnesota.

• Age itself does not greatly affect breast cancer treatment for young women. Treatment options are based mainly on the cancer stage, tumor grade and tumor characteristics, such as hormone receptor status and HER2/neu status.

• Breast cancer affects more than just the patient - co-survivors (friends, family and co-workers) need support too.

• In 2015, it is estimated that among U.S. women there will be 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 40,290 breast cancer deaths.

• Breast cancer in men is rare, but it does happen. In 2015, it is estimated that among men in the U.S. there will be: 2,350 new cases and 440 breast cancer deaths.

According to Komen Scholar Dr. David Mankoff, molecular imaging could become a key tool in identifying whether breast cancer patients are responding to certain therapies. Read more about Dr. Mankoff's research, the Komen-funded Imaging Program at the University of Pennsylvania, and how this promising research has led to funding from other organizations in our latest blog post.
