When I was a casual runner, there wasn't a need to invest in additional gear and accessories. To effectively train for my first half marathon, however, I needed some assistance. Here are seven things that helped me prepare for conquering 13.1 miles.
Nike Free 5.0
1 of 8When I first started running, my calves would fatigue and become sore. I quickly realized that I needed to invest in a different pair of shoes. I went to a speciality running store to go through a gait analysis and determine what shoes would fit my running style. I eventually chose the Nike Free 5.0, and the soreness in my calves magically disappeared.

Nike 7" Distance Running Shorts
2 of 8After weeks of running in my baggy basketball shorts, I gave in and followed the trend of short running shorts. It was one of the best decisions I've made, and the Nike shorts I've been wearing on my runs feel much better.

SPIBelt
3 of 8The perfect accessory for storing your iPod, phone, keys, or any other small item. I transitioned from running with my phone in my hand, to my pocket, and eventually to my SPI Belt. The latter was far superior to the others, and I highly recommend investing in something similar.

FuelBelt Revenge R2O
4 of 8As my mileage increased, I realized I would eventually need to find a way to hydrate during my runs. This is when the FuelBelt came into play. The convenience of having two water bottles at your waist during a long run is invaluable, and once I got used to it, I barely noticed the belt.

Nathan HyperBrite Strobe
5 of 8Living in a warmer climate means running during the day isn't always the best option. To avoid the heat, I often chose to run at night. The light has been a great accessory to clip onto my shorts and keep me safe in the dark.

RunKeeper
6 of 8There are dozens of running apps out there, and many of them are just as useful as the others, but RunKeeper is the one I settled on. Having the ability to know my mileage and pace as often as I wanted was very helpful during my training.

RunnersConnect
7 of 8Had it not been for the guidance of an online training program, I would've had no idea where to start with my training. The support of my coach through the site was also very helpful, as she was able to answer any questions I had and provide positive feedback and encouragement.
