About this event

Instructor: Dr. Walter B. Curry, Jr. is the founder of Renaissance Publications, LLC. Dr. Curry received a bachelor’s degree from South Carolina State University and has earned graduate degrees, including a doctorate in Curriculum & Instruction from Argosy University. Dr. Curry has published two books, The Thompson Family: Untold Stories from the Past (1830-1960) and The Awakening: The Seawright-Ellison Family Saga, Vol.1, A Narrative History. Both books consist of stories that cover the lineage of Dr. Curry’s ancestry from slavery, the Civil War, the Reconstruction Era, and family life in Aiken County, South Carolina, and beyond. Description: Session 1: will focus on the foods Confederate soldiers ate, prepared by camp cooks. Course topics include a brief history on the difficulties of cooking and how it affected Confederate soldiers’ chances of survival during the war; how the Confederacy was able to supply food for their soldiers; how camp cooks skillfully used cooking tools and creativity to prepare food for their soldiers; and why some Confederate soldiers brought their slaves to cook for them and their respective regiments. There will be food and artifact displays along with handouts. Session 2: will be a field trip to historic Rivers Bridge State Historic Site, the only Civil War preserved battlefield site in South Carolina, located near Ehrhardt, SC. At the site, attendees will participate in a guided tour of the site and partake in a cooking demonstration by park ranger Russell Stock that will include foods prepared by Confederate camp cooks.
