Instructor: E.N. Hoffman has worked at SRNL for over 15 years and has a background in materials science and engineering. She currently is the Director of Innovation and University Engagement. Description: Savannah River National Laboratory performs research and development to provide solutions addressing the mission needs of the Department of Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration. Unique technical challenges associated with environmental management risk reduction and national security often require large teams with unique expertise and a deep understanding of nuclear materials, processes, and their associated challenges. This class will highlight three areas of interest to the DOE/NNSA that require unique technical solutions to complex challenges. Each area of need will be identified along with approaches the laboratory takes to respond to the technical challenge with applied solutions. This class will also review exciting new collaborative opportunities that SRNL is engaged in with academia and the community. For each class, Hoffman will be joined by a different subject matter expert and early career researchers in the following areas: Session 1: Advances in Nuclear Material Processing: This class focuses on managing and treating nuclear waste to enhance public safety and environmental stewardship. Session 2: Nuclear Non-proliferation Challenges: This class details SRNL’s activities to protect the nation and world from rogue uses of nuclear materials through detection, retrieval, and safeguarding. Session 3: Developments in Fusion Energy and the Fuel Cycle: This class focuses on SRNL’s role in next-generation nuclear energy production, including leveraging tritium expertise to harness fusion energy
