THE PINE LAWN CEMETERY

Business & Education Bldg. Room 144 • 471 University Parkway AikenSC  29801 Organized by University of South Carolina Aiken

About this event

Instructor: Dr. Andy Dyer is a professor of ecology, botany, and environmental science at USC Aiken (since 2000). He has published two general science books: one on pesticide resistance and agriculture (Chasing the Red Queen, 2014) and the second on the microbiome (Eaters Digest, 2022). His approach is to take science topics that are relevant to everyone and try to explain them in a way that allows the audience to understand the topic and make more educated decisions. Description: Pine Lawn Cemetery, established in 1852, is a poorly understood historical jewel. Years of cleaning, documenting, and restoring have uncovered very interesting finds. However, its future as a working cemetery is hampered by poor burial documentation, to the point that there may be no room for more. A cemetery mapping company was hired to locate, and map known and lost burials and create an interactive online map with all relevant information. This course will discuss the cemetery and the trove of new information discovered.
