Description
Adult. Using the cabinet constructed in the first class, you will add a door, using mortice and tenon joinery and a drawer, using half-blind dovetails or rabbits or dados. Depending on time and skill levels the doors will either be overlay or inset, drawers either overlay or piston-fit. The drawers will be side hung. Some machine tools will be used in the construction, along with the same hand tools used in the cabinet class.
The Beginning Cabinet Making and the Beginning Cabinet Making - Intro to Doors & Drawers classes are consecutive; however, each can be taken separately. A materials fee of $30 will be due to the instructor by check or cash on the first day of class, which covers the materials and dimensioning of the lumber. This is also an advanced class. It is highly recommended that prospective students have taken the Woodworking With Hand Tools 1 and 2, OR have extensive experience with woodworking joinery with hand tools.
Taking just the Intro to Doors & Drawers class separately, students come away with a drawer, using half-blind dovetails and a panel door, using mortice and tenon joinery.
If you are new to cabinet making and didn't take Part 1 in the fall, you will be challenged to make the cabinet "carcass" or box. Questions can be directed to the instructor, rather than to the Rec & Ed staff.
Advanced students and/or those with sufficient time will also learn to create a mortice and tenon stand, if desired. Registration for Intro to Doors & Drawers will begin on 11/7/24. The last day to register for Intro to Doors & Drawers is 1/6/25. Instructor: Ken Ray. 8 classes. No class 1/24 and 2/14.
