Woodworking With Hand Tools 2 - Intermediate

Slauson Middle School • 1019 W. WASHINGTON ANN ARBORMI  48103 Organized by Ann Arbor Public School System

About this event

Description

Adult. Prerequisite: Woodworking with Hand Tools Beginning or instructor approval. This class is meant to be an extension of what was learned in the introductory hand tools class. Students should have some experience creating dovetail joints. A more sophisticated project will be used to teach students further techniques using saws, chisels, layout/marking tools, hand planes, blade sharpening and more.

This is a 10 week course that intentionally has small class sizes to ensure that proper attention will be given to each student. This semester's project will be a tool tote. It will utilize dovetail construction and wedged tenons for the handle. It is made from repurposed Red Oak wood with a Black Cherry handle. More advanced students will be able to embellish and customize this tool carrying box based on skill and the time allowed. Through demonstrations and practice, this class will give you the necessary skills and experience to allow you to design future projects. Your imagination will be the limit with the knowledge of planes, chisels, saws, and scrapers that you will take away from this class. We’re excited to share the joy of creating usable wooden heirlooms and foster a love of working with your hands and simple tools in a functional way.

All required tools will be provided, but there will be a $60 material fee, payable to the instructor on the first day of class, to cover the cost of lumber and hardware. If the student would like to provide their own tools here is a suggested list:

-6” 4R ruler (Imperial/inches) such as the Shinwa brand

-3 good quality chisels in 1/4, 3/8 and 3/4 sizes. A suggested brand is the Narex Richter brand

-A woodworking marking knife. A suggested brand is the Lee Valley plastic handle model

-A 4” double square.

-A low angle block plane

-A joinery back saw such as a dovetail saw.

Last day to register will be Wednesday, September 11th. Instructor: Aaron Landy. 10 classes.
