Printmaking: Painterly Prints
Instructor: Laura Whitesides Host

Monotypes are a combination of painting and
printmaking which is a spontaneous way of working
and readily lends itself to experimentation. Class
instruction concentrates on water-based media
such as paints, crayons, pencils and inks. This class
explores different painting/printing processes using
gelatin plates, plexiglass plates, drypoint plates, stencils
and masks, and collagraph plates.

All Levels

Materials List First Class just show up. I'll have plates for you to use, we'll be doing watercolor monotypes that day, if you have watercolors - bring them and brushes. If you don't have them, there are some at the studio. As you have paid a materials fee, please know that all the pigments are provided, as well as newsprint paper, brushes, brayers, palette scrapers etc. The students provide their own print paper. (See below). One plate (8 x 12) will be provided as well as one sheet of paper. Studio has other plexi plates for student's use, but getting some of your own is nice to work at home and bring in to print. (See Plates below)Since the studio has the inks for you to use, the only other pigment that we use is watercolor. If you have your own, please bring with your brushes. The studio has some watercolors, palettes, and brushes that we share. You can paint your plates with watercolor at home and bring in and print at the next class. This takes advantage of the presses in the studio. PLEXI PLATES - I usually say the plexi should be 1/8 inch thick but it is actually not quite 1/8 inch - about 3/32 is more true. If we all have the same thickness we don't have to readjust the presses for each time we print. I advise getting a couple of the same size - 8 X 12 or 9 X 13. These fit in standard 16 x 20 frames and you get 4 prints from one sheet of paper. The paper is 22 x 30 inches - so if you wanted an inch margin around the image on the plate you would have a 20 x 28 inch plate although you could have a 22 x 30 it will fit on the press and there would be no margin this way. I will have one 8 x 12 plate for you as part of your materials fee. We will prepare this on the first class. Think about small plates also - maybe 3 or 4 the same size for a series of prints. I have quite a few plates for the class to use, but just know you are sharing with everyone.
PAPER- I have printmaking paper for sale. Rives BFK is a very nice paper and it is $2.75 per sheet. Most of our plates are in the range of 8 x 10 or 9 x 12 so you can get 4 prints out of that one sheet. We sometimes use rice papers( Masa) or Yupo paper (it's plastic), which I also have for sale. Watercolor paper can be used but it is not always as successful to accept a print due to more sizing in it. Most of the equipment that you need to bring is in the form of subject matter. For some projects we use a toner-copied print to use in a paper litho method. Sometimes a color copy of something for another transfer method will be needed. Also collect soft texture items. Bubble wrap, laces, doilies, mylar ribbon (cut out circles), feathers, leaves (dry them between magazine pages), stamps, stencils, etc. Most anything that is not sharp and definitely flat can be used. I have a lot of "stuff" but keep on the lookout. A sketch book is always recommended - it's your thoughts and ideas for a series of prints or just jotting down something you want to explore, or rip out some pictures from magazines for inspiration and glue in the sketchbook. An idea book. Scissors, masking tape, Xacto knife, pencil, brushes, palettes, watercolor crayons are provided but also shared.
