About this event

Description

We're sorry, but this activity is over. The last meeting was Tuesday, July 16, 2024.

A new style appeared in France before the First World War and blossomed in the 1920s. It reached America after the famous Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes of 1925. It fostered a new approach to crafts and more particularly to architecture and industrial arts, shaping cars, household objects, books and a myriad object of everyday life. The times were tumultuous, from the Roaring Twenties to the Depression, from cries for social reform to the harbingers of the coming conflict. Throughout this period, designs and manufacturing, buildings and homes were being transformed by forward-looking engineers, architects, ship-builders, ébénistes, graphic artists, advertisers, weavers and jewelers. This illustrated lecture will consider the development of the Art Deco style on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, its social significance and later imprint.

Join expert Madeleine Deschamps while she explores the history of the Art Deco style.

This presentation will be followed by a Q&A and a glass of wine.
