About this event

Bottlemania! Exploring Bottle Forms and Surface Textures with Andy Mazzaschi November 16th: 1pm- 4pm The bottle is a ubiquitous and versatile form; they can be as utilitarian and unadorned as a milk bottle or as intricate and delicate as a perfume bottle. In this workshop, we'll tackle the challenges that bottles present--keeping that neck narrow, for one thing!--and explore the aesthetic possibilities they offer. Andy will begin with throwing demos of small sake bottles (~2 lbs) and introduce some of the general principles of bottle-throwing, with particular emphasis on collaring. As the workshop progresses, Andy will demo larger forms and some texturing techniques for those interested in pushing limits (your own and the clay's!). The texture techniques will include faceting (cutting away clay and stretching the form from the inside while on the wheel) and slip texture (applied on or off the wheel). Andy will be available with handmade tools and advice throughout. Participants are encouraged to bring whatever clay body they are most comfortable throwing, as well as a bottle (or photo) we might use for inspiration (completely optional). A few Suggested tools to bring are; -The Basics: A Rib Tool, Wooden Knife, Sponges, and Pin Tool - Sponge on a Stick (or a chopstick +Sponge+ Rubber Band to make your own!) -Throwing Stick; helpful but not required - Squiggly Wire is Suggested for adding texture, Andy will have some available for use Slip will be supplied, but if you have a preferred slip to bring, Andy says the best texture for slip is a pudding texture. A homemade Squiggly Wire Retrofitted Cheese Slicer is included in your registration!
