Description
Prerequisite(s): 10-13 years old.
This program is designed for youth between the ages of 10 and 13 who are interested in building comfort and confidence on the climbing wall. Training is conducted weekly in a fun, yet structured environment. The program follows the "Learn to Train" model of Sport for Life Canada, focusing on top rope climbing and bouldering. Sessions will include introductory climbing movement and technique lessons as well as some fitness training.
Participants on the Development Team are invited to register in our semesterly climbing competitions at MRU.
Team members will be provided with a Recreation Climbing Centre membership so they can train between scheduled training sessions at no charge.
Participant Outcomes:
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate introductory climbing movement skills.
- Climb and belay with efficiency whether top rope climbing or bouldering.
- Practice effective training techniques to advance climbing technical skills and fitness level, as well as projecting techniques to aid in further development.

Program Schedule
This program consists of weekly two-hour classes, regularly scheduled on Tuesday evenings, throughout either the fall (Sept-Dec) or winter/spring (Jan-June) semester. Double-check the specific program dates and times at the bottom of this page before registering.
Participants can be registered for the winter/spring session without having already participated in the fall session. Mid-semester registration is allowed with programmer approval - please contact us at climbing@mtroyal.ca to request.
To ensure your best experience we recommend you attend this program with:
- Active clothing and footwear (closed-toe shoes) in alignment with our facility access guidelines.
- Climbing harnesses and chalk will be provided, and climbing shoes are available for use if desired.
