Description
Prerequisite(s): 13-17 years old with previous climbing experience.
This program is designed for youth between the ages of 13 and 17 who are serious about climbing, and follows the "Train to Train" model of Sport for Life Canada. Training is conducted once-weekly in a fun, yet structured environment. The program goal is confidence development through personal challenge with mental and physical training. Sessions will include drills and exercises that focus on technique, technical skills, mental acuity, and strength. This program was created to assist climbers in exceeding their perceived potential; therefore, a conscious commitment to training and a strong dedication to climbing are required.
Participants on the Development Team are encouraged to register in our semesterly climbing competitions at MRU. Additional local competition opportunities will be made available for interested climbers.
Team members will be provided with a Recreation Climbing Centre membership so they can train between scheduled training sessions at no charge.
Participant Outcomes:
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate advanced climbing movement skills.
- Climb and belay with efficiency whether top rope climbing, lead climbing, or rappelling.
- Practice effective training techniques to advance climbing technical skills and fitness level, as well as projecting techniques to aid in further development.

Program Schedule
This program consists of weekly two-hour classes, regularly scheduled on Thursday evenings, throughout either the fall (Sept-Dec) or winter/spring (Jan-June) semester. Double-check the specific program dates and times at the bottom of this page before registering.
Participants can be registered for the winter/spring session without having already participated in the fall session. Mid-semester registration is allowed with programmer approval - please contact us at climbing@mtroyal.ca to request.
To ensure your best experience we recommend you attend this program with:
- Active clothing and footwear (closed-toe shoes) in alignment with our facility access guidelines.
- Climbing harnesses and chalk will be provided, and climbing shoes are available for use if desired.
