Description
The mid-18th century into the 19th century was a period of significantgrowth of industry in the Patapsco River Valley. Wheat replaced tobacco asthe major cash crop and grist mills as well as iron furnaces and forges dottedthe landscape. By 1795, mills operated by the Warfields, Owings, and Ellicottswere located on the Patapsco and Middle Patuxent Rivers. By 1815, the portof Baltimore was the number-one port for wheat exports. Join us as weexplore the land indentures, company records, census data, and letters fromthese families that chronicle the impact the Patapsco and Patuxent cradle ofindustry had on its inhabitants and the natural environment.
