Description
To participate in this course the participant must be at least 15 years old on or before the last day of the course.
Participants must pass the prerequisite swimming skills before receiving the required online material. The online material takes approximately 6 hours to complete all the modules. This must be completed prior to the second day of the class.
When you successfully complete the course, you will be certified in Lifeguard Training, CPR/AED, and First Aid as mandatory components of the class.
Attendance is mandatory for ALL classes. To be eligible for the Lifeguard Training certification, participants must score 80% or higher on the written exam, complete all trainings, and satisfactorily perform all combined skills in the water, first aid, and CPR/AED.
Please note: pretest date is Saturday, Feb. 1 from 9:00-11:00 am

Prerequisites 1:
- Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest.
- Jump into the water and completely submerge, resurface, then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed)
- Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
- Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed)
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
- Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
- Please note that to be eligible for employment, the City of Coralville requires lifeguards to be 15 years of age.
A $25 application fee will be assessed for any cancellation. If a cancellation occurs within one week or less a $40 application fee will be assessed.
Coralville Parks & Recreation Department is offering a class reimbursement program! If you pass the class and work for us and fulfill other criteria, we will reimburse your class registration fee!
