Grade Level: 10 - 12 Length: June 9 – July 18, 2025 Final Exam: July 18, 2025 NO SCHOOL: June 19 and July 4 Essential Skills: Students who are successful in Honors Chemistry generally come into the course with strong competency in previous sciences and math courses. Students must have concurrent enrollment in Algebra II or higher and score a successful grade on the Chemistry Readiness Test. Graduation: Fulfills Physical science requirement College Prep: Fulfills CSU/UC lab science “D” requirement with a grade of “C” or better, weighted course (weighted in grade 10 and above on the college prep GPA, weighted in cumulative GPA if taken in grade 9 or summer after grade 9.) Honors Chemistry is a rigorous college prep class meant for students who have demonstrated success in mathematics and previous STEM courses, and who intend to go onto higher level science courses such as AP Chemistry, AP Biology, Honors Anatomy, Honors Physics/AP Physics, or AP Environmental. This class requires that students be self-motivated, detailed and will work both independently and collaboratively on specific assignments. In order for students to be successful in Honors Chemistry, students must complete non-graded practices and homework routinely and in a timely manner. Detailed formal laboratory notebooks are required and are graded for both detail and accuracy. Honors chemistry is concerned with the chemical properties of substances. Topics include: properties of matter; atomic theory, electron clouds and probability, periodic trends, chemical formulas, chemical reactions, chemical bonding kinetic theory, the gas laws, properties of solutions, reaction rates, acids and bases, oxidation-reduction and entropy. In addition, the course material supports the physical science and earth science core standards of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
