Description
Nabucco by Giuseppe Verdi. This opera by La Scala (under Ricardo Muti) follows a semi-fictionalized story of King Nebuchadnezzar II's enslavement of Jewish/Hebrew slaves in Babylon (ancient Iraq). Nabucco's (secretly adopted) daughter plots to overthrow her father and assume his crown and kill all the Jews. Nabucco is temporarily rendered "insane" by a bolt of lightning whereupon his daughter assumes his throne. But Nabucco is restored to sanity just in time, is converted to Judaism and saves the slaves. This opera is one of Verdi's earliest (c. 1842) and establishes his fame as a composer. The music is rousing and melodic, including the famous choral highlight, Va Pensiero (Fly ,Thoughts, on Golden Wings). This opera is sung in Italian with English subtitles. Moderated by Dr. Sam Stern. October 24, 12:00pm Thursday, October 24 12-3:30pm Please contact Ellicott City 50+ Center for more information at 410-313-1400.
