First Friday Nature Science Exploration (Fri-Sci)

Through the Trees • 2 Griffin Road FreeportME  04032 Organized by Through The Trees

About this event

NOVEMBER CLASS FOCUS: Trees Globe Challenge On the first Friday of each month, families come together at Through The Trees to become citizen scientists! Join us as we participate in a citizen science project for GLOBE, measuring tree height. We will also be looking at various tree leaves. For this project, the use of a mobile device is needed, with the GLOBE Observer app downloaded. Other parts of our class will not require a device. Steps include selecting a tree and using your device to measure the angle from the bottom to the top of the tree, walking to the tree and counting your steps (to determine the distance) and reporting on surface conditions. The app will use that information to calculate an estimate of the tree’s height. Optional steps are taking a photograph of the tree and measuring the circumference of the tree. We will also be offering a leaf activity with fall leaves! Class is 10-12 and families are invited to pack a picnic lunch and stay from 12-1pm. Outhouse bathrooms available. $25 per Family
