Six IN-PERSON sessions September 17, 24, October 1, 8, 15, 22 For those of us educated in the mid-twentieth century, the study of women writers was limited. But ever since the women’s movement led scholars to uncover previously little-known women writers, the study of literature has grown richer. In this course we will read some well-known writers such as Emily Dickinson, Alice Walker, and Alice Munro, as well as discovering lesser-known ones such as Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, Kate Chopin, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Always we want to consider what these writers reveal about the lives of women yesterday and today. Men are welcome in the class. Karen Sirmans taught English Composition, American Literature, and Women’s Studies at Pensacola Junior College. Now, in retirement, she reads avidly, participates in BULLI classes and several book clubs, travels, gardens, and enjoys life at Lanier Village. Her great joy is guiding BULLI students to see their own experiences reflected in literature.
