Three IN-PERSON sessions October 8, 15, 22 Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) are used to help individuals (e.g., single woman) and infertile couples create families. ART includes extracting eggs from an ovary, fertilizing the eggs in a lab (in vitro fertilization) and transferring embryos into the uterus. ART may involve sperm banks, egg donors and surrogates. In 2021, 86,146 infants (2.3% of the total) in the U.S. were conceived through the use of ART. Ethical issues associated with ART include the basic right to have children, the destruction of unused embryos as medical waste, complications due to multiple births, the use of third-parties for sperm and eggs, sex selection, the moral status of the embryo, parental property rights concerning embryos, and the rejection of embryos due to preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) for conditions like Down syndrome. In the future, fertility clinics may be able to genetically engineer babies for specific traits such as higher intelligence and eliminate mutations associated with disease or disability.
