Description
Join us each week as we gather to discuss Heather McGhee’s book, The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together. Prior to each meeting, book club members will read a portion of the book (around 50-60 pages) to prepare to engage in brave conversations surrounding how public and private policies and practices uphold racism and economic inequality in the United States. Using the book as a guide, we will ask ourselves how the sum of us, including people of all backgrounds, races, and identities, have been negatively affected by racism and what we all have to gain through its dismantling. This group will be facilitated by Skylar Hoffman, a Senior Center intern and social work student at the University of Iowa who is currently working toward a certificate in Critical Cultural Competence. No meeting Mar 20. Fee: $10 (book provided); pay at registration.
