The Lifeguarding Instructor (LGI) course trains instructor candidates to teach American Red Cross student-level courses including Lifeguarding, Waterpark Skills, and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers. Instructor candidates who hold a current student-level Waterfront Skills certificate will also be able to teach the Waterfront Skills course. This instructor course does not teach student-level lifeguarding skills and knowledge. Participants must come to class already knowing student-level lifeguarding content.

Prerequisites:
Candidates must successfully pass the following course pre-requisites:
1. Candidates must be at least 17 years of age by the end of the course.
2. Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills (on the first day of class):
3. Candidates must possess and show current American Red Cross lifeguarding certification and professional-rescuer CPR/AED certification.
4. Candidates must complete online lifeguard instructor orientation before first day of in-person class and how proof of completion.
5. Candidates must pass pre-course testing scenarios on lifeguarding skills and CPR knowledge at the beginning of the instructor course.

To pass, candidates must:
1. Complete all online orientations and content (please note that all blended learning classes have 7-10 hours of required pre-course work that must be successfully completed before in-person skill sessions)
2. Attend all class sessions
3. Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities
4. Correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions in the final written exam

Enrollment note: Registration closes 2 weeks before first in-person date.There is online work required prior to in-person start date. Minimums must be met to run courses. No refunds are given after the 2 week window or in the case of failed pre-requisted but credits will be used for future American Red Cross class or other Iowa City Parks & Recreation activity.
