Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge includes 8,500 acres and features a rich diversity of landscapes - bottomland hardwood forests, pine forests, croplands, wetlands, and open waters. The refuge was created as a sanctuary for migratory birds, and during peak season, waterfowl can be spotted in the 10,000's. After a quick 50-minute trip in the van, we'll take the Tall Pines Trail (easy 1-mile loop), venture out to the fields, and eat lunch near the pond.
Pre-registration required. Shuttle provided to and from Pee Dee Wildlife Refuge, leaving from Stevens Creek Nature Center (15700 Thompson Road, Mint Hill). Appropriate for all levels of bird/nature watchers. Must be able to travel on natural surface trails at a slow-moderate pace; distance covered will depend on group pace and include stops to view wildlife. Bring food and water as desired; none provided. BYO binoculars or borrow from the center.
Prior to the program, the instructor will email important information on how to prepare, what to bring, etc.
