Join us for a 2 day workshop, where we will explore the ancient art of coiled basketry, using a variety of natural fibers and handmade bone needles. The first day will consist of crafting bone needles from deer bones, and on the second day we will make our baskets using those needles. Our hands love to make beauty, and it adds an important layer of meaning and story when we've shaped not only the project at hand, but also the tools that make it happen. Baskets are an ancient and beautiful technology that are found all over the world. Creating baskets with natural materials is a creative and fulfilling way to work with your hands, get to know your environment, and make one of a kind pieces of functional artwork. Coiled baskets in particular are a great way to enter into the craft; they are very versatile material-wise, and can be as simple or complex as the maker chooses. We will work with a variety of materials and discuss the sequence of identifying, harvesting, and processing the fibers. Great for all skill levels. You will take home your own basket and needle.
