About this event
The concept of play, and a child's freedom to guide his or her own, free from the influence of adults, has become antique. And childhood has changed in turn. Sociologist Sandra Hofferth authored a long term study which examined the amounts of time that children spent on various activities in 1997 compared to the time spent on similar activities in 1981. Among other things, the study revealed that children ages 6-8 spent 18% more time in school, 145% more time doing schoolwork at home, 168% more time shopping or errand-running with parents, 55% less time conversing with others at home, and 25% less time playing with other children or alone. All this change happened in a 16 year period, roughly half of a generation. We can imagine what the most recent 25 years of data might reveal about childhood today. Enter Play Club: an unstructured, outdoor experience designed to allow childhood to happen unencumbered. By allowing it to unfold organically, we unleash the instinct to play, thereby allowing children to control their own journeys, solve problems, get along with peers, and become emotionally resilient. Together, we will enjoy the outdoors and each other while we let our imaginations (and bodies!) run wild. Camp will be outside no matter the weather so coats, hats, gloves, and boots are a must.
