Instructor: Lyle Colombo This course is based on the twelve-week program in Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards, an art educator who was always convinced that drawing has little to do with natural talent and that anyone could learn to do it. Edwards explains the perceptive shift away from verbal, analytic processing toward a right-brained mode of processing visual information that is non-verbal and concrete. In this course, the instructor will guide students through exercises Edwards developed to help us shift from left- to right-mode visual processing. During this course, students will complete a variety of drawing projects, culminating in a self-portrait. Suitable for all levels. At the end of this course students will be able to... ...Shift their mode of perception from analytic symbol system to artist mode ...Produce drawings using a variety of mediums ...Become familiar with basic line elements, edges, contours, and negative space ...Accurately reproduce value and understand its impact on a drawing ...Demonstrate accurate proportion and perspective ...Understand and apply basic color theory Materials Needed: Book: Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards (TarcherPerigee, Any Edition) Inexpensive Drawing Pad 9 X 12" Set of Six Graphite Drawing Pencils 4B Black Graphite Stick (Not charcoal) Conté Crayon Assorted Colors, Set of 12 (Note: Buy "Assorted," not "Sketching," "Portrait," or "Landscape") One Conté Crayon in Sanguine Pencil Sharpener Polymer Eraser Kneaded Eraser Tomtow Eraser Pen: Amazon Self-Portrait Mirror (any mirror, at least 8 X 10" that can stand freely on a tabletop: Amazon [Materials to create viewfinder and picture plane will be supplied later for a $5.00 fee.] [Toned Pastel Paper and sheet of Drawing Paper 11 X 17" will be supplied for a small fee.]
