What stories live just beneath the surface of a painting? What happens when you step into a work of art and imagine what comes next? In this immersive workshop, you’ll use augmented reality (AR) as a tool for visual storytelling—layering your own drawings and animations onto artworks from the Portland Art Museum’s permanent collection. Using iPads, Procreate, and an AR app, you’ll animate and overlay your digital drawings onto existing works of art—expanding, disrupting, or quietly transforming their narratives. Guided by creative technologist Sonya Neunzert, you’ll explore how emerging technologies like AR can bring new perspectives to historic works and open portals to new meaning. What you'll experience: – Storytelling through digital layering, animation, and interactive design – Experiment with AR tools that transform static images into interactive scenes – Explore how digital storytelling can reframe and reimagine the museum experience We’ll begin in the galleries, where you’ll choose an artwork that sparks a question, a feeling, or a fragment of a story. Back in the studio, you’ll sketch, animate, and experiment—blurring the line between the physical and the virtual. By the end of the workshop, you’ll walk away with a personal digital creation that reframes the past through a contemporary lens. Step beyond the frame—this is art in motion, history reimagined, and creativity redefined.
