Get Fit, Keep Healthy, Learn Something New, Meet New People, Do It For Fun
This class is designed for recreational and beginners participants without any prior Judo experience. Judoka will be introduced to the fundamentals of Judo. These classes offer adults the opportunity to work at their own pace as they are introduced to the basics of falling techniques, footwork and basics of posture. The emphasis is not competition, but the chance to get fit, meet new people, move up the grade system with the aim of achieving their black belt, and have fun. The ultimate goal is 'perfection' of techniques.
Anyone can do at least some parts of Judo. There are a few different areas of Judo, the five major focuses are throws, hold-downs, supporting techniques, break falls and kata. Judo is used for fitness, body awareness, martial art combat and confidence! Judo was the first martial art to become an Olympic sport. If someone is motivated, they can do most parts of Judo, if not all!
If you decide to enroll in the program, you will need a Gi! Make sure it is Judo specific or at least Jujitsu if you already have one. We recommend having at least a white Gi, sport compression shorts and t-shirt on top for regular class.
Registration into this program is free for all members. Additional fees will be due as part of the registration with Judo Canada and purchase of Gi if required. More information on club fees and dues can be found here: https://www.shinmurajudo.ca/ymca-classes
Judo is a contact sport. If there are any underlying concerns with getting heart rate up, tumbling around, falling and getting back up, grappling with others or are prone to or are currently suffering from concussions we suggest you contact a physician to inquire about active participation in Judo.
