Since I strapped on my first Garmin (the Forerunner 610), I've felt a strong connection to the brand that has consistently empowered my running and fitness journeys. As a dedicated runner and aspiring triathlete (currently retired), I've relied on Garmin devices to track my progress and push my limits. Then, changing to the Forerunner 920XT and then to the Garmin Fenix 6 Pro, each watch was a game-changer for me. However, curiosity and the lure of new features got the best of me, which led to my decision to upgrade to the Garmin fenix 8. I'll share my experience with the fenix 8, highlighting its standout features and why it might be the perfect companion for runners like me who demand more from their fitness tech.
Overview of the Garmin fenix 8
The Garmin fenix 8 builds on the success of its predecessors, introducing a suite of improvements that make it incredibly appealing to tech-savvy athletes. Right out of the box, the fenix 8 exudes a sense of quality and innovation. The unboxing experience was thrilling, revealing a sleek design and a feeling of robustness that promised durability. Compared to the fenix 6 Pro, the fenix 8 boasts a larger, more vibrant display, offering enhanced visibility even in bright outdoor conditions. The AMOLED screen is bright and crystal clear, which has been extremely helpful during my evening runs in the dark. The initial setup was straightforward, seamlessly syncing with my existing Garmin Connect account, allowing me to get acquainted with the new features and layout quickly.
Enhanced Fitness Tracking
One of the most exciting aspects of the fenix 8 is its commitment to delivering advanced fitness tracking capabilities tailored to various activities. For a runner like me, the device offers improved metrics that provide deeper insights into performance and recovery, and I only sometimes follow the recovery suggestions. Adding more detailed VO2 max readings, training load analytics, and real-time stamina monitoring have been instrumental in optimizing my training regimen. Whether pounding the pavement or tackling rugged trails, the fenix 8 has delivered accurate data that keeps me informed and motivated. While I haven't personally experienced tracking for cycling and swimming, the data that can be given further highlights its versatility, making it an ideal choice for triathletes and multi-sport enthusiasts.
Navigation and Mapping
Regarding navigation and mapping, the fenix 8 raises the bar with its enhanced GPS accuracy and comprehensive mapping features. The integrated topographic maps have been a game-changer for my trail running adventures, providing a clear sense of direction and elevation changes. What truly sets the fenix 8 apart is its ability to generate suggested routes based on my preferences and past activities. This feature has been handy when exploring new cycling routes, ensuring I stay on track without the hassle of pre-planning every detail. The device's navigation precision has proven invaluable in real-world applications, guiding me confidently through unfamiliar terrains.
Battery Life and Charging
Extended battery life is crucial for any serious athlete, and the fenix 8 doesn't disappoint. With its impressive battery performance, I can confidently undertake long-distance runs and intense training sessions without worrying about running out of juice. You can get almost 1 month of battery life out of the box by using the fenix 8 as a watch, longer if you choose the solar version. When using the GPS and activity tracker, battery life will go down, but I am still getting more than 16 days before I need to consider charging it. Having come back to Garmin from an Apple watch (to test) and having to charge the Apple watch daily, the fenix 8 is far superior. The inclusion of new charging technology allows for quicker recharges, minimizing downtime between workouts. During my training and weekend walks with the family, the fenix 8 consistently delivered on its promise of lasting power. Knowing that the device won't falter when I'm in the zone is reassuring, helping me focus on my performance rather than the battery percentage.
Design and Comfort
Aesthetics and comfort are often overlooked aspects of fitness wearables, but the fenix 8 nails both effortlessly. I went with the Carbon Gray to go with everything; that way, I wouldn't have to worry about changing out the band. The Titanium with Spark Orange band could suit you if you want more flair. Its refined design balances ruggedness and elegance, making it suitable for workouts and casual wear. The build quality is evident in every detail, from the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal display to the robust titanium bezel. Despite its durability, the fenix 8 remains surprisingly comfortable on the wrist. I can wear it all day without experiencing any discomfort, even during strenuous activities. The interchangeable bands add a layer of customization, allowing me to match the device to my style effortlessly if required. Coming in 3 different sizes: 43mm, 47mm & 51mm, you can find the right fit and size for your wrist, followed by three different versions of AMOLED, Solar, or Fenix E.
I highly recommend if you are looking to upgrade. Truly amazing!
User Interface and Software
Navigating through the fenix 8's user interface is a breeze, thanks to its intuitive design and responsive touchscreen, which can be turned off if you don't care about the touch screen. The updated software introduces many new features that enhance the overall user experience. Garmin has incorporated personalization options, enabling me to customize watch faces, widgets, and data screens to suit my preferences. This level of personalization adds a personal touch and ensures I have access to the information that matters most during workouts. The fenix 8's ease of use streamlines my interactions, allowing me to focus on what truly matters—my fitness goals.
I have read that some users have experienced software glitches that have affected battery life, screen display, or just strange behavior. These individuals seemed to have signed up for the beta software program. From what I know about beta software, things still need refinement. I did not sign up for the beta program and have experienced ZERO issues with the software or the watch itself.

Price
Lets talk a bit about the elephant in the room, the price. This is an expensive watch, hands down. Prices range from $799 to $1,199, depending on the size and version you select. But I look at this differently than just looking at the final cost.
One way to look at this is, what are you spending on a gym membership? Currently, I am not paying for a gym membership. If you are spending between $66 and $100 per month, that is the exact cost of a monthly payment for the watch. Let's take it another step further. How many days a week do you go to the gym? The average is 2 to 3 days, over a month, 10 times, so every time you are at the gym, you pay roughly $10. With the fenix 8, I wear my watch 24 hours a day, minus showering (I know it is waterproof, but still), which is roughly $3.33 per day over a year. That is less than a Latte at your local coffee shop. Plus, there are no monthly fees like other fitness/sleep tracking devices, which can add up.
I am not discounting the overall financial cost that the fenix 8 could be; I am just trying to get you to look at that cost differently. The fenix 8 is an investment, and I have chosen to make that investment in my health and fitness journey, especially upgrading from the fenix 6 Pro to the 8.
Conclusion
In summary, the Garmin fenix 8 is a remarkable upgrade that caters to runners, fitness enthusiasts, and tech-savvy individuals seeking a comprehensive and reliable fitness tracker. Its enhanced fitness tracking capabilities, accurate navigation features, and impressive battery life make it an indispensable tool for those dedicated to pushing their limits. Whether you're a seasoned triathlete, an aspiring marathoner, or someone who loves to explore the great outdoors, the fenix 8 has something for everyone. My experience with this device has been overwhelmingly positive, reaffirming Garmin's reputation as a leader in the fitness technology space. If you're ready to take your training to the next level, I highly recommend trying the Garmin fenix 8—you won't be disappointed.
