Description
The last day for Internet Registration was Oct 9, 2024 11:59 PM.
This course is designed to be an introduction to what philosophy is and what kind of questions philosophers try to answer. We will do this through a topical overview – each week we will cover a different area of philosophy. Throughout, I hope to give context to the issues being covered, their relations to other ideas, and their history. Major thinkers will be mentioned, and appropriate readings will be recommended (but not mandatory). I will also read some excerpts of philosophy to show how philosophy is done. By the end of the course, students should have a better grasp of how we might think about philosophical notions and why they are interesting or useful. Asking questions and generating discussions will be encouraged – after all, that is what philosophers do! No experience with or previous education in philosophy will be expected.
