About the Naturalists: Mary O'Brien has been studying and practicing herbal medicine since 1987. A Colorado native, she has lived in the Yampa Valley for over 30 years, where she teaches herbal medicine, makes herbal products, and maintains a medicinal garden for the Yampa River Botanic Park. Karen Vail received her B.S. in Horticulture, with a concentration in Botany from Colorado State University, and earned her Master's Degree in Gardening from the Royal Horticultural Society in England. Karen and Mary are co-authors of "Edible and Medicinal Plants of the Southern Rockies. Date and Time: May 19th. We will meet at 11:45am, and should be wrapped up by 3:15pm. The event will take place from 12pm - 3pm. Location: We will meet at the Stockbridge Transit Center on the west side of town. You will be left behind if you are late. Ages: 18+ What to expect: This foraging tour will take us along a private trail that is about 2 miles in total length. Along the way, Karen and Mary will point out and collect forgeable items. After the foraging hike, we will gather in a nearby barn area for snacks, refreshments, and a Q&A with Karen and Mary about local medicinal and edible plants. What to wear: Dress for the weather (current and future) and dress in layers! Many people like to wear long pants/sleeves to protect themselves from the sun, dirt, and things that might make them itchy (mosquitos, etc.). Avoid cotton when you’re able and go with a synthetic material or wool. Also remember to wear sturdy hiking shoes, good socks, a cool sun hat, and sunscreen! What to bring in your day pack: Water bottles, snacks, sunscreen, extra layers, and your waterproof jacket- weather changes quickly, so make sure to prepare for cooler/wet weather. Please bring along any medications you may need, including epi-pens. We recommend bringing along gardening gloves.
