Join Yampatika naturalists and US Forest Service biologists on this nighttime snowshoe tour! Throughout the tour, we will stop to survey for boreal owls and search for other species of interest on the ski mountain. Snowshoers will also be trained on the new Steamboat Ski Resort - Wildlife Watchers iNaturalist project. This program is weather-dependent! Owls are not active in high winds or snow, so the tour will be cancelled in those conditions. What to expect: The snowshoe tour will take the gondola to Thunderhead Lodge, hike up the Vista Nature Trail to Duster or Chisolm Trail, and ride the gondola back down. Gondola passes are provided thanks to the Steamboat Resort! The route is around 3 miles out and back and has ~400 feet of elevation gain. We will wander and stop often, and will not be taking on the full 400 feet of elevation gain all at once. Insulated, waterproof shoes are required! Bring a headlamp with a red light setting if you have one- flashlights also work but headlamps will be easier. Wear comfortable clothing for the weather and make sure to layer! Bring plenty of water and snacks. Where to meet: We’ll meet at the Thunderhead Lift parking area at 6:45pm. Transportation: You are responsible for your own transportation; please PLAN AHEAD. There is free parking available, and most hotel shuttles and public transit options will NOT drop you off nearby. Cost & Refunds-This program requires a deposit of $20.00 per person. If you need to rent snowshoes, the fee will cover this. If you do not need to rent snowshoes, we will refund you for attendance. If you do not attend or cancel last minute, the deposit will be forfeited. If you have additional questions or need more information, please email hailey@yampatika.org or call the office at (970) 871-9151
