About this event
Vendor: Mulholland Prep Coaches: Christian Schneider & Dov Engelberg Description: The benefits of debate are manifold. Kids learn to research, speak in public, and formulate arguments. The long-term academic benefits are too many to count! To optimize student learning, debate is open to our 5th and 6th grade students and is a year-long activity (Late August to end of May). We'll start off the year learning about debate, working in teams of 3, and participating in intramural debates. Coaches will select students to participate in debate tournaments. Tournament participants will be selected based on engagement and dedication in and out of practice. All things being equal, priority will be given to 6th grade debaters in the event our team sign-ups exceed league roster limits. In addition to our regular class time, our debate coaches will also provide extra weekend practices prior to debate tournaments, further enriching the debate experience for all students. Parent Training: The exact date is still TBD. Will likely be in September. Golden West Debate League Tournament Dates: TBD, most likely one in November, January, March, and May. Student Commitment: Debate classes reinforce a number of skills that support academic success. Students learn to research, speak in public, work together as a team, and formulate arguments from multiple perspectives. Please note that student success in debate tournaments requires an extensive commitment dedicated to research, writing, and practice outside of debate class. It is important to keep this significant time commitment in mind when considering whether to enroll your student in debate. Children who wish to take the debate enrichment class but who are not interested in participating in tournaments are welcome, but should inform the school and teachers so they will not be assigned to a tournament team. Parent Commitment: When signing up for this class, one parent or guardian must commit to attending training to learn how
