Instructor: Dr. Allison Hamilton has worked on presidential races and local elections and has taught political science courses for 20 years. She is currently the executive director of Citizens for Nuclear Technology Awareness in Aiken, SC, and teaches political science at Middle Georgia State University. Dr. Hamilton has a Bachelor of Arts degree in group social studies for secondary education, a master’s degree in applied politics, a master’s degree in Political Science, and a doctorate in Political Science. Description: This course will spend the two weeks leading up to the general election looking at the polling data, expected outcomes, and why the electoral process is how it is. The week after the election will consist of a debrief—what happened compared to expectations, what the results mean, and considering the ‘next steps’ to formally finalize the results. Session 1: Overview of the United States electoral system. We will discuss key state races, the electoral college, and why certain states are ‘swing states.’ Session 2: Predictions on outcomes. This class will dive into the predictions from polling data on the presidential election, state elections & interesting/important other elections (senate, house, governor, etc.). We will also consider what makes polling data more or less reliable & the best practices of how public opinion surveys should follow. Session 3: What happened?. We will review what we predicted versus the actual outcomes. We will also dive into what is next for the Electoral College and what both sides (Democrat & Republican) are saying about the results.
