Apr. 28-30 · Stair Construction

Hammerstone Ithaca • 720 West Green Street IthacaNY  14850 Organized by Hammerstone: Carpentry for Women, LLC

About this event

Overview: In this class we’ll cover the fundamental rules of designing a set of stairs including the relationship between rise and run, handrail design, and headroom clearances. We’ll step through the process of designing a set of code-compliant stairs in a given space, and consider what constraints might limit your own design. Once our stairs are designed, we’ll practice the hands on skills of laying out and cutting stringers, risers and treads, then assemble the staircase. While the stairs built in this class are utilitarian, we’ll discuss options for more refined staircases inside a residence. Finally, we’ll discuss special cases like tiny house staircases, and how to utilize the awkward space underneath stairs. While our class time does not allow for handrail construction, we’ll discuss the regulations concerning rails, and different methods of execution. Project description: In this class we’ll be building a set of stairs to access the second story loft in our downtown shop space. The style of construction will be appropriate for a utilitarian space, but we will discuss alternative options for more refined spaces. Students under 18 may attend with parental permission.
