Here are eight tried and true lessons for how to clean a Camelbak from people who have done it many times themselves. Try a few and choose the most effective option for you.
- If you don't have the manufacturer's tool to keep airflow through the reservoir while drying, wad up a dry paper towel and place it in the reservoir to get the same effect.
- For the quickest and most thorough drying, blow compressed air through the tube.
- To save money, use denture cleaning tablets in place of the manufacturers' cleaning tabs.
- Pour several cups of water and baking soda into the reservoir, shake, let sit for an hour, rinse, then fill with water and lemon juice. Shake and rinse several times again, and then air dry. You can also leave the baking soda in over night, this is especially helpful if you've used it for sports drinks.
- Combine a very small amount of bleach, about 1/2 teaspoon, with a gallon of water to clean the reservoir and tube. Leave the solution in for an hour and then rinse several times before drying.
- Pour a solution of vinegar, about a tablespoon, and water into your system, shake and let rest for at least 15 minutes, drain and dry.
- Put half a cup of water into the reservoir, heat in a microwave until the water is hot, and then leave water in until it cools.
- Put your hydration pack in your freezer. Some people think this might shorten the bladder's life, but it's a good way to keep the system free from bacteria.

Proper Storage
Once your Camelbak is completely clean and dry, you can store it. Disconnect all the parts and keep it in a spot out of the sunlight to inhibit bacteria growth. Hanging the system is a good idea, as it helps to make sure none of the parts are twisted or bent during storage.
Knowing how to clean a Camelbak is important to both the longevity of the product and your health. Follow basic cleaning processes every time you take it out and use thorough cleaning techniques once a month.
