Keep Insects Away from Your Site
Without building an enclosed structure, it's nearly impossible to keep insects out of your campsite. However, there are simple steps that can minimize their intrusion.
Try setting up a perimeter of citronella candles, tiki torches or mosquito coils around your camping space. They'll help deter most bugs from entering your site. It's low-grade shelter, but it can provide some relief.
For insects like ants that enjoy picnics, sprinkling a trail of scouring powder around key areas—such as the base of your tent, RV leveling jacks, water hoses and power cords—can be an effective deterrence. Be sure to ask a ranger or campground host if it's okay before you start.
Secure all food and drink to keep bugs, insects and other critters away. Self-sealing plastic food bags, coolers, storage bins and refrigerators can stop scents from attracting pests. Be sure to keep beverages covered, and don't forget to sweep up any crumbs and dispose of your garbage properly.

Use Personal Protection
Of all the things bugs like to eat, humans seem to be at the top of the list. Fortunately, there are several products you can use.
Insect repellant is usually the first thing that comes to mind, with products containing DEET proving to be most effective. DEET sprays, lotions and wipes can be used to apply protection to your skin. Other products are entering the market for campers who prefer the "natural" approach. While they're often useful in urban backyard environments, though, some aren't quite strong enough to ward off forest-strength attackers.
Dressing accordingly is another important form of protection. Long-sleeve shirts, pants and a hat can go a long way in keeping the bugs at bay. Avoid wearing bright colors, however, as they can attract unwanted guests.
