Wear Test
Hardcore Mizuno fans have been waiting for a worthy heir to the discontinued-but-still-so-popular-we're-tired-of-hearing-about-it Wave Elixir. The Wave Catalyst does a nice job of bridging the gap, combining the support of the Elixir with the cushion of the Sayonara.
The ride was super smooth from start to finish, and the Wave plate—a plastic layer embedded in the midsole—provided light structure without jeopardizing a responsive feel. In fact, we thought the Wave Catalyst had just the right amount of get-up-and-go for our daily runs, and it really stood out on days when our legs were fresh and our cadence was high.
We tested the Wave Catalyst at half marathon training distances, and were surprised with how well it held up around the 10-mile mark. On one 10-mile run in particular, we put in negative splits over miles seven through 10—setting high marks for both stability and speed at longer distances.
"The Wave Catalyst would definitely be voted Most Popular in your high school yearbook."
Thanks to its quick turnover, this shoe is also ideal for tempo runs and hill repeats; but we wouldn't recommend it on the trail, as the low-to-the-ground design and blown rubber won't give you the grip you need on gravel or trails.
As a bonus, we loved this shoe at the gym, where the midsole stability even held up to a Bosu ball circuit.
Final Thoughts
The Mizuno Wave Catalyst would definitely be voted Most Popular in your high school yearbook. It's attractive, appeals to a wide range of people, doesn't try too hard to be something it's not and excels in multiple areas. In short, the Wave Catalyst is pretty hard not to like.
If you're a runner who wants mild support without sacrificing speed, you may have just met your perfect match.
