What makes writing good? How do stories impact me? How do I tell my story? Am I empowered to write? This course will guide students through these questions, exploring and introducing the world of poetry and creative writing through a series of thematic sessions. Students will look at topics like love, nature, music, art, death, and political life, exploring them creatively, emotionally, and philosophically. In a world that is increasingly difficult to process, with teen mental health the worst it has been in history, this is a class that seeks to discuss and discover sources of meaning and critical thought. Activities include free-writing and sharing stories, debating the literary merit of both Taylor Swift and ChatGPT, and accessing storytelling with art. The course is additionally constructed to inspire a love and curiosity of writing, transforming it from something distant and inaccessible to fun and achievable. At the end of the class, students will have one, complete polished work of writing in their form/genre of choice. **Oxbridge Academy students who complete a for-credit summer course will receive a letter grade and course credit on their Oxbridge transcript.** Prerequisites: English 1 and English 2 Requirement: Composition Book Instructor: Lily Jurskis English Teacher Education: M.Div., Yale University B.A. Literary Studies and Creative Writing, Marshall University, (Society of Yeager Scholars) Ms. Jurskis, a proud Oxbridge Academy alum '17, has returned to her alma mater to share her passion for education with her students.
